Since Chrome 76, there is a new native lazy loading that could be used instead of additional JavaScript: https://web.dev/native-lazy-loading/

It has been implemented in Prerelease 5 https://forum.getpublii.com/topic/publii-0-36-prerelease-5/ and is supported by almost all our free themes; also, you can use original (RAW) images.
