EXIF & Privacy issues

Hola, I am not sure if this has been discussed, I’ve searched through the site a few times, but can only find a handful of light issues of Publii and EXIF data.

Recently I was told by a friend that images I’ve been uploading to my website (art portfolio) haven’t been stripping out the geolocation of my photos (phone camera photos).  I have had experience with other online content management systems in the past and just assumed this would be done for me at an upload processing state by default. You can imagine my shock downloading a photo of mine, opening the file info and seeing a map with a pin directly above my home.

I was wondering could you make the handling of images/thumbnails by default, delete EXIF geodata and maybe have it as an option to retain it (for those who might need to include it). I’m sure there is also other privacy issues in other areas of EXIF but specifically this to me seems a huge issue.

I was fortuate to have a friend tell me about 3rd party software I can use to remove it from my files, but I’m sure it’s not a consideration for most people.

    Hi,

In fact WordPress also preserves metadata in full-sized images. So in fact it is a similiar situation, because when you know URL to thumbnail image, you can get full-sized image.

But yes – it is a good idea to implement a set of options which will remove such metadata. We will consider it for next version (v.0.45). I am not sure if it will be easy to remove it from original images, because in fact Publii don’t process them during upload.
