How does the Selected Posts Sidebar Feature work?

I’m using the Blank theme to customize a new theme.

By default, the sidebar displays Selected Posts. How is this being generated?

From what I understand by looking at the source in the sidebar.hbs, these selected posts are generated from tags.

Yet when I create several tags and apply them to specific posts, an entirely different set of posts are displayed.

This is so confusing.

So I finally resolved this by modding some posts and resaving them, plus clearing the browser cache, and completely deleting the output folder.
