Mercury 2.4.0.0 Theme – prev/next navigation on posts aren’t being displayed

I’ve enabled display of  post navigation in the theme’s settings, but it doesn’t show on the posts. So I double checked on each post’s settings and sure enough, it was set to “use global configuration”. Then I switched that explicitly to “enabled” on each post, emptied the browser cache and reloaded the pages, but still the navigation on the posts doesn’t show. What am I doing wrong?

Just tested using Publii v0.41.1 with Mercury theme v2.4.0.0 on Apple macOS Ventura v13.2, with no problems: the prev and next navigation displays and performs as expected.

You’re using Mercury v2.4.0.0 theme, so I presume you must be also using the latest version of Publii (currently v0.41.1).

    Maybe more information might help.

Are you using PC, Apple Mac, or Linux?

Do you have any theme overrides installed (https://getpublii.com/docs/overriding-publii-theme.html )?

Thank you. I’m using Publii v.0.41.1 with Mercury theme v2.4.0.0 on Apple Mac OS Monterey 12.6.3.

Browsers I’ve checked this with:  Safari 16.3 for Mac OS, and on Safari for iOS 16.2, Firefox 109.0.1 (64-Bit) for Mac OS and Firefox Klar 109.0 (16317) for iOS 16.2, and Brave v1.47.186 for Mac OS. None of them display the navigation on posts. The only browser extension I use is for my password manager, and I even disabled that for testing purposes.

Within Publii’s tools & plugins section, I have installed the Matomo Plugin and added some CSS code for displaying embedded YT videos correctly, plus one line in the HTML section for additionals meta tags. But I have also tried it with these minor edits all disabled, the post navigation still doesn’t show.

Your issue is quite a mystery. Certainly, there’s a problem with your install. Though it seems hard to imagine how not having the latest macOS could cause your particular issue. If you haven’t already done so, I would consider creating a completely new test website with say 6 minimal posts (no images necessary for this test), then apply the latest Mercury theme v2.4.0.0, with no other plugins or changes made. Make sure the Prev and Next navigation buttons are turned on in the theme settings, then check how your second test site displays in Preview.

If the nav buttons display normally, going back to your other main website that is giving the problem, perhaps you can progressively isolate each difference to find the cause.

Or if the nav buttons don’t display on this second test website also, the mystery deepens. In that event, maybe @Bob or @Tomasz could help.

Thanks @itips3727, and sorry for not getting back to you sooner, I only just saw this reply.

I have tried your approach and the new test site worked flawlessly, the navigation did indeed show up.

I don’t really see what else I can do with my main site, though. How would I isolate the problem, besides repeating all what I have done until now? I have since discovered that the navigation does show up in preview mode, but not live. Another piece in the puzzle?

The fact that your prev and next navigation displays normally in Preview mode, but not live, might suggest a caching issue on your server, in that your live site might be showing an older version of your site (without prev and next buttons turned on). So perhaps log into your web hosting and if you have any caching activated to speed up displays, empty all caches. Plus empty your web browser cache, history, temp files. Close and restart your web browser. Make sure you’ve got the latest version of your site uploaded to your web hosting, then check again. Fingers crossed.

@itips3727 Thanks, did all that, but to no avail. The navigation still won’t show on the published post.

It is not really important, the site works well and looks good without it, but the feature would be nice to have and I just don’t understand why it won’t work. *sighs*

All right, I don’t know how I did it, I must have clicked on any available button at least thrice, but now it works. \o/ Probably like a USB plug that is plugged in correctly on the third try. Thanks for your help. 🙂
